Government responds to CMA recommendations about single mandatory consumer code and ombudsman

The New Homes Quality Board and New Homes Ombudsman Service welcome the Government’s decision to have a single mandatory consumer code for all housebuilders operating in Great Britain and activating the New Homes Ombudsman Service for all consumers.

The Government’s decision was announced on 22 October 2024, as part of their response to the recommendations in the Competition and Market Authority’s (CMA) Housebuilding Market Study, published in February 2024.

Rob Brighouse Chair of the New Homes Quality Board said: “The Government’s decision to back a single mandatory consumer code and activation of the New Homes Ombudsman is a great development. This move will help to create the much-needed level playing field for all new homebuyers by offering a single route for redress and set of protections offered through the Ombudsman.

He added: “It also means that all housebuilders are required to adhere to the same framework (the Code) in respect of quality and customer service provided to all new homebuyers. We will be engaging with government and all stakeholders over the coming weeks and months to help put this into effect.”
